Smoking pipes may be more recognizable for some than others especially as our society has changed preferences to other delivery methods for tobacco. This was once one of the preferred ways to use tobacco before cigarettes became popular. Although more elaborate in design and construction, a pipe is essentially a tube with a screen inserted inside which acts as a filter. There is a small cylinder portion at the opposite end of the mouth piece called a bowl that holds ground up tobacco leaves. Pipes were constructed by many different civilizations most notably the North American and South American natives who introduced setters to the practice of smoking. These cultures’ pipes were usually long and thin, made from wood and heavily decorated for ceremonial activities. Smoking pipes today are much shorter, can still be made from wood although most midrange models are made from a combination of wood and plastic.
